Is Tap Water Safe?
We all know that we need water to survive, but is tap water really safe for daily lifelong consumption? The truth is that the government is trying to provide the safest water they can for the least cost, but that may not be enough for everyone’s health and safety. Many municipal water suppliers warn that tap water is not recommended for babies, elderly or those with immune disorders or cancer for example. In our own city of Lincoln, Nebraska, where we manufacture our distillers, the water quality report says:
Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. This includes immuno-compromised persons such as those with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, those who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune systems disorders, some elderly people and infants. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. (Lincoln, Nebraska Water Quality Report: https://www.lincoln.ne.gov/city/pworks/water/pdf/water-quality-report.pdf?2016-report)
This means that there are contaminants left in tap water due to a cost benefit analysis. This goes for every water treatment facility in the United States. Some facilities are within federal standards, while others are, at times, out of compliance. When you think about the chemicals that could be in your water, it makes you think twice. Below is a list of chemicals for which our own city of Lincoln tests for. You can google what your city or area tests for to see what contaminants may be present in your water.
Which Contaminants Could Be in Your Water
The City of Lincoln is required to test for the following contaminants: Coliform Bacteria, Antimony, Arsenic, Asbestos, Barium, Beryllium, Cadmium, Chromium, Copper, Cyanide, Fluoride, Lead, Mercury, Nickel, Nitrate, Nitrite, Selenium, Sodium, Thallium, Alachlor, Atrazine, Benzo(a)pyrene, Carbofuran, Chlordane, Dalapon, Di(2-ethylhexyl)adipate, Dibromochloropropane, Dinoseb, Di(2-ethylhexyl)- phthalate, Diquat, 2,4-D, Endothall, Endrin, Ethylene dibromide, Glyphosate, Heptachlor, Heptachlorepoxide, exachlorobenzene, Hexachlorocyclopentadiene, Lindane, Methoxychlor, Oxamyl (Vydate), Pentachlorophenol, Picloram, Polychlorinated biphenyls, Simazine, Toxaphene, Dioxin, Silvex, Benzene, Carbon Tetrachloride, o-Dichlorobenzene, Para-Dichlorobenzene, 1,2-Dichlorethane, 1,1-Dichloroethylene, Cis-1,2,-Dichloroethylene, Trans-1,2-Dichloroethylene, Dichloromethane, 1,2-Dichloropropane, Ethylbenzene, Monochlorobenzene, 1,2,4-Trichloro- benzene, 1,1,1-Trichloroethane, 1,1,2-Trichloroethane, Trichloroethylene, Vinyl Chloride, Styrene, Tetrachloroethylene, Toluene, Xylenes (total), Gross Alpha (minus Uranium & Radium 226), Radium 226 plus Radium 228, Sulfate, Chloroform, Bromodichloromethane, Chlorodibromomethane, Bromoform, Chlorobenzene, m-Dichlorobenzene, 1,1-Dichloropropene, 1,1-Dichloroethane, 1,1,2,2-Tetrachlorethane, 1,2-Dichloropropane, Chloromethane, Bromomethane, 1,2,3-Trichloropropane, 1,1,1,2-Tetra- chloroethane, Chloroethane, 2,2-Dichloropropane, o-Chlorotoluene, p-Chlorotoluene, Bromobenzene, 1,3-Dichloropropene, Aldrin, Butachlor, Carbaryl, Dicamba, Dieldrin, 3-Hydroxycarbofuran, Methomyl, Metolachlor, Metribuzin, Propachlor. These are just some of the many possible chemicals, viruses or bacteria that could be present in your water.
What is in Your Tap Water?
There are up to 85,000 chemicals that could be found in tap water, yet only 123 of those chemicals are regulated. Without taking your tap water to a lab, you can’t know everything that is in it at any given time. Source water for water treatment facilities can be contaminated by anything from excess bird droppings to chemical spills by manufacturing facilities. The only way to really protect yourself and your family is to purify your water.
Why Distillation is the Gold Standard for Water Purification
Water distillation outperform all other methods of water purification. In addition to that, it is all natural! By simply recreating the Hydrologic Cycle, we are able to gently boil water (like evaporation), then condense it (like clouds), then capture it in a glass jar (like rain). Distillation provides naturally clean water that is 99.9% pure. Pitcher filters, fridge filters and even reverse osmosis systems can’t come close. They are not able to consistently and reliably remove known and unknown contaminants. Pitcher or reverse osmosis systems rely on filtration only. AquaNui water distillers essentially collect the clean water via evaporation and condensation and leave contaminants behind. It also has a post filter to catch any volatile organic compounds. The entire system creates fresh pure water.
Other Benefits of Distillation
Convenience. If you hate the cost of bottled water or adding more plastic to landfills and you are simply buying it for taste, then you should definitely get a water distiller. Automatic units can pump water to a kitchen spigot, fridge and ice-maker. You will get high quality water that is as convenient as tap water. Fill a nice stainless steel cup for water on the go and say good-bye to plastic bottles!
Taste. Probably one of the best things about freshly made distilled water is the taste! It is fresh and clean and makes wonderfully clear ice cubes.
Health. Distilled water is so refreshing that we’ve had calls, emails and letters from customers who say that they are now able to drink a lot more water. One woman said, “I’m so happy with my distiller…now my husband drinks water instead of Mountain Dew. I couldn’t be happier.”
Joints. While we are unable to make health claims, we’ve had many people contact us to say that it has helped reduce joint pain. We believe that this may be due to removing chemicals that may be causing inflammation.
Why AquaNui?
We would be remiss if we did not brag a little about how great AquaNui Distillers are. Our distillers are made with nearly 50 years of professional experience. We make our distillers from high quality stainless steel in the U.S.A. They are durable and long lasting. In fact, some customers are still using distillers that are over 40 years old! Not only are our distillers built to last, they consistently produce great tasting water. Automatic distillers are convenient and for those who do not want to or don’t have access to a water line, we have a countertop water distiller that is manual fill.
