BPA is only 1 of over 24,000 chemicals to be concerned about leaching from plastic

Over the past decade, a growing number of consumer advocates worldwide have been demanding plastic products that are free of the hormone-disrupting chemical PlasticBottlebisphenol-A (BPA). This global movement  led to some significant positive changes especially containers manufacturing in the food, beverage and water industry. Your bottled water may be BPA-free but a new study from Germany found thousands of chemicals that could be leeched from the plastic into your drinking water.  Researchers from Goethe University in Frankfurt in conjunction with researchers from the German Federal Institute of Hydrology, tested 18 different bottled water products to look for the presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs).  They found 24,520 different chemicals in the water using a combination of bioassay work and high-resolution mass spectrometry technologies.

The Concern

The main concern was the presence of a plasticizer known as DEHF, di (2-ethylehexyl) fumarate, which exhibits significant anti-estrogenic activity.   In 16 out of the 18 samples, this chemical inhibited the body’s androgen receptors by 90%. This chemical was not strictly anti-androgenic however, which suggests that it is combining with another chemical to create this effect.

According to Wikipedia, EDCs can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders.  Specifically, they may be associated with the development of learning disabilities, severe attention deficit disorder, cognitive and brain development problems; deformations of the body (including limbs); breast cancer, prostate cancer, thyroid and other cancers; sexual development problems such as feminizing of males or masculine effects on females, etc.
